The NHS Trust Development Authority has today placed Barts Health NHS Trust into special measures.
This follows the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) publication of its report into the Whipps Cross Hospital site. Prior to publishing the report, the CQC suggested to the NHS TDA that special measures should be considered given the scale of the challenge ahead.
NHS TDA Director Alwen Williams said:
“The additional support the Trust will receive as part of special measures will help them to rapidly make the necessary improvements for patients. The Chief Inspector of Hospitals has highlighted the scale of the challenge ahead and this is an opportunity to ensure the Trust has the extra support it needs to meet this challenge.”
To ensure the necessary improvements are made a package of tailored support will be put in place. This will include the appointment of an improvement director and the opportunity to partner with a high-performing Trust.
As part of its immediate response to feedback from the CQC, Barts Health has already announced that it has begun to strengthen management arrangements at Whipps Cross. In addition, Tim Peachey, the TDA’s Associate Medical Director will also work with the Trust to take forward the improvements needed in the quality of services at the site. Tim will work as the improvement director at Whipps Cross – he brings a wealth of clinical experience as a Consultant in Anaesthesia at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, and as Chief Executive Officer of Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust prior to its acquisition by the Royal Free London in July 2014.
