Following approval from the Secretary of State for Health, Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust will be taken over by Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, which will acquire its services, staff and assets as of 1 July 2014.
While this is a managerial change and patients will not see any immediate changes to services, the long term benefits are numerous:
- Joining the Royal Free will secure the future of both Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals and provide more opportunity for investment in services in these local areas.
- The Royal Free has an international reputation in many areas of specialist care, meaning closer links between specialist care and patients living in Barnet, Enfield and Hertfordshire.
- There will be new and exciting opportunities for staff with a greater critical mass for teaching the clinicians of tomorrow.
- The single larger NHS Foundation Trust will build strong links with local GPs and the services they provide, leading to improved care for local people. For patients this could mean fewer hospital visits, shorter hospital stays and, when appropriate, more care closer to their homes.
